Basically, once you do the grunt work of cutting them out, hole-punching the pumpkins, and circling the answers, students have a self-checking addition facts math center that will last for years to come (At least in my classroom they have lasted quite a while.).

Poke cards are a tool my students have been using for awhile now in math centers, and if you haven’t tried them, you should! Their self-checking format kind of reminds me of Hot Dots cards if you’re familiar with those. It’s engaging, works great with partners, and students can be completely independent (while having fun!).

How Poke Cards Work

Students choose a poke card and solve the problem. They “poke” the right answer with a pencil, coffer stirrer, cupcake pick, magic wand, ect. In this image we are using a cupcake pick, I believe, that has snow inside that you can shake!

Then, if alone, students check the back of the card to see if their poker went through the right hole. If they’re with a partner, the partner will check for them.

This week we have been practicing multi-digit multiplication, so I made some winter multiplication poke cards for them to practice that.

Students worked out the problem on the card with white boards (although I have included recording sheets, too).

They poked the right answer.

They showed their card to a friend to check for them.

If they were correct, they got a chance to try to make a basket with our mini basketball hoop. (Which they love and have broken. But they fixed it themselves, so I guess I’ll forgive them. :P)

So if you’d like to give poke cards a try or even if you have already, I just uploaded a new freebie called Snail Patterns. It’s aligned with common core standard 4.OA.C.5, and I think it should be a lot of fun for upper elementary kiddos.

Look at my cute, little Easter-themed tic-tac-toe game I found at my local Dollar General!

And what makes it super fantastic is that the cute little egg and chick pegs work perfectly with poke cards.

So, once a student answers a poke card correctly by inserting a peg into the right hole, they then place it in the tic-tac-toe game board. And this game is a lot quieter than my Pig Popper game, that’s for sure!

 How “Poppers” Work:

1) They each come with these soft mini-balls. You place one in the snout or mouth of the popper. Give their belly a good squeeze and the ball comes flying out! (I bought mine from some catalog, but they’re all over Amazon, too. I also saw a fish one at Cracker Barrel.)

I know this sounds like a recipe for disaster in the classroom, but I am super fortunate to have an awesome group of kids who can handle this type of play while learning.

How I Incorporate the Pig Popper in my Math Stations:

1) I snagged this really cool black net at Goodwill for a $1. This serves as the goal for students to shoot at.

 
2) I give students poke cards. (In the picture, you can see I used my Equivalent Fraction Poke Cards.) They take turns answering a card. If they’re correct, they shoot the pig popper in the net. If they are incorrect, their turn is up. Here’s a video to show you how my poke cards work.

3) If the ball goes in the net, they score a point. If it doesn’t, no point is scored, and their turn is up.
4) Any type of flash cards or task cards would go great with this game format. I have poke cards and QR code task cards that are self-checking that I utilize in this type of math station.

To keep it a little more learning focused, I realized a recording sheet would be beneficial. So I’ve created one just for this game. You can grab it for FREE here or click the image below.
