Just wanted to share with you my latest QR code resource called Party Penguins Multiplication QR Code Task Cards Scavenger Hunt. This is a great activity to do before the holidays, especially when
students may have already packed up and the day is nearly done.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Party-Penguins-Multiplication-QR-Code-Task-Card-Scavenger-Hunt-1560436

Here’s how it works:

After cutting and laminating the cards, place them around the walls of your classroom, preferably in number order. I use StikkiClips from Amazon to hang my cards for quick placement and removal, but I was home when I prepped this post, so you’ll see I stapled the card onto one of our walls……..that my husband had painted……that he got a little bit upset about…..that I’m just like, Oh well, you doesn’t understand my passion! 😛

Hand students a recording sheet (I’ve provided one in English and Spanish), a clipboard and a pencil. I usually divide my students into partner groups since we don’t have enough devices. If you are very limited on scanning devices, this could be an activity early finishers choose to do.

What students do:

1) Choose any card. I know scavenger hunt cards usually have a start and an end, but if all my students are starting at the same time, that’s a recipe for claustrophobic chaos.
2) Scan the QR code first to see the multiplication problem.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Party-Penguins-Multiplication-QR-Code-Task-Card-Scavenger-Hunt-1560436

3) Write the problem from the QR code onto the recording sheet in the box that has the same number as the card they picked.

4) Solve the problem. Once they have the answer, they search around the room for the remaining cards to find the one that has the answer from their sheet.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Party-Penguins-Multiplication-QR-Code-Task-Card-Scavenger-Hunt-1560436

5) Once they find the right card, they scan the QR code on the new card and begin solving that problem in the appropriate box. They continue until they’ve found all of the answers.

My students have had lots of fun with this. Some kids get way too excited like they are searching for Easter eggs. I guess that’s okay, but I’m seriously thinking of sticking these cards to the outside of my portable. That way they’ll get more exercise, sunshine, and volume won’t matter as much. But of course I’ll wait until spring. I can’t stand this cold!

So, to grab a copy, click here or on the image below. And if you’d like some tips on using QR codes in the classroom, check out my QR Code Classroom Craze post.

The weather is pretty nice nowadays (except for the rain), so I’ve decided to work on some outdoor math stations. Task card sand buckets are one activity I plan on incorporating.

Students will dig through buckets of sand to find task card capsules to complete.

Materials:

* Sand Buckets – I purchased mine for $1 at Dollar General.

* Toy Capsules – I ordered mine off of Ebay (I made an offer and got them for $8.50).
* Task Cards – The sky’s the limit! I just printed some Super Teacher worksheets and cut out the problems. Amber Polk from Adventures of a Third Grade Teacher has some really cute free math task cards for 3-4th grade here.

* Sand – It’s probably ridiculous that I did this, but I purchased sand at Lowe’s for about $3 a bag. One bag was more than plenty.

Preparation:

1) Prepare task cards.
2) Fold them into the capsules.

3) Pour sand and add capsules in intervals. I added 12 capsules to each bucket because my capsules are fairly small.

4) Get ready for sun in the fun!

I plan on having my students work their problems out with chalk on the sidewalk. I don’t have answer keys, so they will use calculators to check their work.

Should be fun!

Do you have any cool outdoor math activities you could share with me? I need around 8. Thanks! Hope your week is going well!

I love math stations, and I think or at least hope that my students do, too. Here is what we did recently during math station time to practice multi-digit multiplication.

To begin, students worked in partners (I really don’t find more than that as productive. One student always seems to be standing aloof or off-task).

I gave them each a recording sheet which I got from my Multi-Digit Multiplication QR Code Fun resource. Students carried this around on clip boards while rotating around to the different stations. Once their sheet was full, they turned it in for a QR code behavior coupon and then grabbed a new sheet to start again.

iPAD Station

Students used the apps Multi-Digit Multiplication (can’t find the link :() and Lattice Grid to practice problems. They were allowed to copy these onto their recording sheets.

Smart Board Stations

Students played Multiplication Problems, a self-checking game I created, on the Smart Board. These problems were also allowed to be copied onto their sheets.

QR Code Task Card Station

Using one of those preschool gumball machine toys, students chose a ball. Each ball had a number written on it. The number on the ball was the number of the QR code multiplication task card that they were to complete. It’s amazing how much fun they have with this toddler toy. After solving the multiplication problem on the card, they used an iPod to scan and check their answer.

Soccer Poke Cards Station

I found this little soccer game at Goodwill. It was brand new and still in the package. Students answered an extended multiplication poke card from my Popsicle Poke Extended Facts Resource. If they were correct, they tried their luck at kicking the ball into the net. To do this, you actually have to plug your fingers into the shoes. When I demonstrated this for the kids, I got so tickled and could not stop laughing. It just looked so ridiculous!

Answer Keepers Station

I created problems using shampoo bottle caps. Click here to see the post on that activity. Students used vinyl dry-erase circles to complete their work. Then they opened the lid to reveal the answer inside. As you can see, my students are really favoring the lattice method. So different from when I was a kid!

And that’s a wrap! Now we’re on to long division, angles, and coordinate graphing – all in one unit. Thanks, Everyday Math, geesh!

Hope you’re having a great week!

Measurement units and conversions are always difficult concepts for my fourth graders. Last year I created a title called Merry Measurement Activities that was helpful with my students. I also created some self-checking poke cards on length conversion. Now, this year I am working on Smart Board games and QR code task cards to also give my students the additional practice they need.

With the help of some awesome teacher/editors, I have finished the QR code task cards and will be going on to the Smart Board games very shortly. These titles can be purchased individually for $2 each or together at a discount.

If you haven’t tried QR codes in your classroom, I feel you are missing out! I never have to encourage students to work when QR codes are involved!

(contains 24 self-checking task cards for students to practice unit facts and conversions with cups, pints, quarts, and gallons)
(contains 24 self-checking task cards for students to practice unit facts and conversions with inches, feet, yards, and miles)
(contains 24 self-checking task cards for students to practice unit facts
and conversions with seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and
years)
(contains 24 self-checking task cards for students to practice unit facts
and conversions with the metric system [milli-, centi-, meters, liters,
grams, and kilo-])
(contains 24 self-checking task cards for students to practice unit facts and conversions with ounces, pounds, and tons)
The cards progress from easy to difficult, and each title contains word problems. These titles are aligned with common core standards 4.MD.A.1 and 4.MD.A.2.
Thanks for your visit! Happy Teaching!

Sometimes husbands can really come through and be geniuses. Such was the case for me recently when my husband and I were shopping, and he suggested buying the classic fishing game as a learning tool. How can it be a learning tool? Well, his suggestion was to stick problems on the bottom of each fish.

What I Ended Up Doing Was:

1) Sticking white stickers on the bottom and labeling each fish with a number from 1 to 21.
2) Covering the stickers with Mod Podge just to be careful.
3) Creating some numbered QR code task cards with a fishy theme on estimation. I ended up creating 24, but only 21 were used for the game.
4) Setting the cards up on a pocket chart.

How Students Played:

1) In pairs during math stations, students took turns fishing.
2) Once they caught a fish, they grabbed the task card with the number that matched the number on the bottom of their fish.

3) Students solved their problem. I had white boards available if they needed to work the problem out.
4) Their partner checked their answer by scanning the QR code with an iPod.

5) If the student was correct, they kept the fish. If the student was incorrect, they had to drop the fish back in the “pond.”

6) The game ended once all fish were caught and won or once the time was up for that group.
7) The student with the most fish won.

This was a lot of fun, and I can use this game with any set of task cards I have made or purchased from other teachers, so that’s pretty nifty.

Word of caution: If students aren’t careful, poles will break, fish will be squashed, students will cry. My game was definitely made in China.

Husbands can really come through sometimes! 🙂
