Identifying Angles QR Code Freebie

Hey, ya’ll! Hope you’ve had a good weekend! I am so ready for the warm weather. And by warm, I mean at least in the upper 70’s. This 50-degree weather is not cutting it!

Here is my latest QR code freebie from my April QR Code Printable pack. In this game, students will identify acute, obtuse, and right angles.

Identifying Angles QR Code Freebie

I love these tic-tac-toe games because they help students review math skills in a repetitive, self-checking way. And only one scanning device is needed to make this game work.

Here’s how it works:

Hey, ya’ll! It’s Bright Ideas Blog Hop time! 🙂 I’m going to share with you a fun and easy-to-make center that your students will love.

It all started with my obsession a few years back with “going green.” Unfortunately, I have lost a lot of steam with this issue, but for awhile there, I tried to reuse anything and everything in my classroom. One way I did that was with bottle cap lids.

I created problems on the outside of the lids…
http://youtu.be/1P3oo58cg4c

 And answers on the inside.

If you’d like to see how it works in action, please watch my latest Youtube video:

If you’ve already got the gist of it, ask students to bring in caps so you can go ahead and get started on your own bottle cap learning center. It’s a perfect idea to reinforce being green and to celebrate Earth Day in April!

Poke cards are a tool my students have been using for awhile now in math centers, and if you haven’t tried them, you should! Their self-checking format kind of reminds me of Hot Dots cards if you’re familiar with those. It’s engaging, works great with partners, and students can be completely independent (while having fun!).

How Poke Cards Work

Students choose a poke card and solve the problem. They “poke” the right answer with a pencil, coffer stirrer, cupcake pick, magic wand, ect. In this image we are using a cupcake pick, I believe, that has snow inside that you can shake!

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Winter-Multiple-Digit-Multiplication-Poke-Cards-1603112

Then, if alone, students check the back of the card to see if their poker went through the right hole. If they’re with a partner, the partner will check for them.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Winter-Multiple-Digit-Multiplication-Poke-Cards-1603112

This week we have been practicing multi-digit multiplication, so I made some winter multiplication poke cards for them to practice that.

Students worked out the problem on the card with white boards (although I have included recording sheets, too).

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Winter-Multiple-Digit-Multiplication-Poke-Cards-1603112

They poked the right answer.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Winter-Multiple-Digit-Multiplication-Poke-Cards-1603112

They showed their card to a friend to check for them.

If they were correct, they got a chance to try to make a basket with our mini basketball hoop. (Which they love and have broken. But they fixed it themselves, so I guess I’ll forgive them. :P)

So if you’d like to give poke cards a try or even if you have already, I just uploaded a new freebie called Snail Patterns. It’s aligned with common core standard 4.OA.C.5, and I think it should be a lot of fun for upper elementary kiddos.

 Snail Patterns Poke Game Freebie

I also just recently bundled up ALL of my upper elementary poke resources. You’ll find review on fractions, math facts, multiplication, elapsed time, angles, coordinate graphing, and a lot more! With over 1,500 cards, your students will be poking all year! (Just hopefully not each other! Dull points, teachers, dull points.) Check it out here.

Upper Elementary Math Poke Card Bundle

So I hope you enjoy the poke freebie! Let me know what you think! Happy teaching!

4th Grade Holiday QR Code Printables Sample FREEBIE

Hey, ya’ll! I’m really excited to share about my latest upper elementary QR code resource made especially with the busy teacher in mind. I’ve had several people ask for QR code worksheets, so I decided to create a worksheet pack and a math center that is very easy to put together. I’ve created a sample freebie for you to try it out and decide what you think!

4th Grade Holiday QR Code Printables Sample FREEBIE

I know worksheets have a bad rap, but with QR codes and a little fun, I think I’ve created a resource that will still provide maximum engagement for your kiddos.

4th Grade Holiday QR Code Printables Sample FREEBIE

One reason I have been hesitant about creating QR code worksheets is the difficulty of scanning QR codes when they are close to each other. To remedy that, I’ve created QR code blockers that will help kids easily scan they code they are trying to scan.

4th Grade Holiday QR Code Printables Sample FREEBIE

On most of the 16 worksheets included there is a fun writing prompt for your early finishers to work on. I’ve included writing paper that accompanies the worksheets to use if you wish with these prompts.

I love the roll and cover types of math games that are so easy to put together and are easy for students to play and practice skills. I tried and tried to think of a way to incorporate self-checking QR codes in a similar, simple game format, and I ended up coming up with a Tic-Tac-Toe version that I think will be easy to play yet mathematically engaging.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/4th-Grade-Holiday-QR-Code-Printables-Sample-FREEBIE-1594292

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/4th-Grade-Holiday-QR-Code-Printables-Sample-FREEBIE-1594292

This elf mat involving prime numbers is actually included in the sample freebie. There are six mats included in the complete resource.

4th Grade Holiday QR Code Printables - Low Prep!

4th Grade Holiday QR Code Printables - Low Prep!

So for this 5 for Fri, I’m going to share some fun fall activities I place in my math stations/centers.

POKE CARDS

Poke cards work like Hot Dots, but they are lots cheaper. You hole-punch the answer options, find some cute seasonal cupcake picks, and you’re read to go!
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Multiplication-Pumpkin-Poke-Game-1490569

Well, you also need to circle the right answer on the back to make it self-checking. A little more prep work is involved compared to Hot Dots.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Multiplication-Pumpkin-Poke-Game-1490569
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/HOWLoween-Owl-Poke-MATH-FACTS-Pack-331835
This is not fall-related, but pizza is great at any season. Students use a timer and see how many Place Value Pizza cards they can get right in one minute.

QR CODE TASK CARDS

I placed these Funny Fall task cards around the walls of our portable and had students “Write The Room.” This active math keeps their little brains energized and ready to work!

PUMPKIN PATCH BINGO

It’s always nice to place a simple game in centers that you don’t have to explain. This set of multiplication fact bingo cards can be found in my Multiplication Pumpkin Patch resource.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Multiplication-Pumpkin-Patch-MagnetMat-Fun-156494

Here’s another non-fallish resource that I have to share. I found these Jenga multiplication facts stickers from Rachely Lynette at least 3 years ago, and as you can see, I’m refusing to replace them. My students love these, but they know I better hear products being called out while they’re building the tower.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/FREE-Multiplication-Facts-Jenga--154973

Here’s a game that’s really too easy for my 4th graders, but it’s still great addition review. Sunny Days in Second Grade’s Boo Bump Addition freebie always makes this season fun and festive in my math centers. She also has a multiplication version which I need to print out ASAP.

Ok, this is neither fall nor math related, but I’m just so proud of my students’ 30hands weather projects. I still have some management bumps to smooth out, but I hope to share soon how your students can create cumulative projects that they can place on a Padlet wall. With all of the projects together, it’s easy to present and use as a refresher all throughout the year. Click here or on the image to watch my kiddos share in their second language.

I hope you all had a great week! Please have a great weekend!

Hey, ya’ll! I’m very happy to be apart of a fun blog hop on one of my favorite topics – teaching math facts. It’s hosted by the very sweet Joy Hall of Joy of Teaching. Be sure to scroll all the way down (and why wouldn’t you anyway?? :P), so you can hop on over to the next awesome tip for learning math facts.

So let me share with you five fun ways that I have my students work and improve their math fact fluency.

1) Poke Cards

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Multiplication-Facts-Beach-Ball-Poke-FREE-250336

I create and use these guys all year long. Here is an example of how it works with my FREE Multiplication Beach Ball Poke Cards.

You print them out, cut and laminate them, and then hole-punch the plus signs.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Multiplication-Facts-Beach-Ball-Poke-FREE-250336

Then taking a light-colored marker, you circle the correct answer on the back.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Multiplication-Facts-Beach-Ball-Poke-FREE-250336

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Multiplication-Facts-Beach-Ball-Poke-FREE-250336

Students then take a coffee stirrer, a pencil tip, a cupcake pick, or in this case a cocktail umbrella (ok, I would not suggest the latter, but it’s all I had in the house and it makes for cute pics :P), and pick the right answer to the fact.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Multiplication-Facts-Beach-Ball-Poke-FREE-250336

Then they self-check or partner-check by looking to see if they “poked” the right circle on the back.
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Multiplication-Facts-Beach-Ball-Poke-FREE-250336
Now, to make this a fluency exercise, have students time each other and see how many they can poke correctly in a minute. They can set goals to beat their previous record every time they practice these cards. If you’d like to learn more about poke cards,  just click here.

2) Arcademics Skill Builders

http://www.arcademics.com/
You may be familiar with this website, but if you’re not, it’s fabulous. There are tons of games for students to practice fact fluency. And the cool thing is, it’s an online experience, so students can play against other students from all over the world. This is a great website to share with parents of students who are struggling with their facts. And if you’re ever in the computer lab or are fortunate enough to have a computer or two in your classroom along with an interactive whiteboard, you should definitely have a teacher/student challenge. Students love this!

3) Math Fact Bottle Caps

This will be my fourth year I believe implementing this activity. I’m starting to get a little tired with it, but students get so addicted to practicing their facts this way.
http://flapjackeducation.com/2011/11/math-facts-bottle-cap-recycling.html
Basically I’ve created Avery labels for students to practice the basic facts for all four operations. The problem is on the top, the answer is inside.
http://flapjackeducation.com/2011/11/math-facts-bottle-cap-recycling.html
For my 4th graders, I put about 40 or so in one can (Pringles, actually) and students practice with each other to try to answer all of them in one minute. When their partner says a student has accomplished this feat, they must face the final test – completing the facts with the teacher holding the timer. No pressure! If they achieve this, they receive a QR code behavior coupon (free, too)

4) Facts Ball

I made this from a Dollar General ball to help students practice their multiplication facts. Any kind of foam ball will hold the marker color pretty well.
We just toss it around when there are a few minutes left in the day. Students have to answer whatever fact their right thumb lands on. To practice fluency, see how many the class as a whole can do in a minute. Try to improve every time you play. Or you could do girls against boys. That is usually harmless competitive fun. Usually.

5) Ice Cream Party Motivator

http://corkboardconnections.blogspot.com/2014/03/icecreammotivator.html
Last but not least, the good ol’ timed quiz. Noooo, you say, not timed quizzes. Kids will hate math forever! Well, math facts are only a small piece of mathematical understanding and skill, and I make sure my students know that. And I don’t call them quizzes, we call them practice. There are no grades, but if they score a certain percentage right, they get to start building their own virtual ice cream.
http://corkboardconnections.blogspot.com/2014/03/icecreammotivator.html
Once all students complete their virtual ice cream (and they all do, even if I do private practices with them during recess), it’s time for the real deal. Ice cream party celebration. Oh, yeah.
To learn more details about how this works along with freebie clip art and ice cream party tickets, visit Laura Candler at her blog where I wrote a guest post on this subject.
So that was five, right? Ok! So, now that you’re down here finally, please head on over Mr. Elementary Math’s super duper post on addition facts web games. Have fun hoppin’!

Hey, ya’ll! I’m happy to be apart of the May Bright Ideas Blog Hop! My bright idea this month is a fun activity my students did to practice ordering fractions. Here’s how it goes:

1) To prep, I cut 3 x 5 index cards in half. I hole-punched each card on each end. I made enough for each child to have one card.

2) My partner teacher gave me these cute little buckets. I’ve been looking for a reason to use them, and I finally found it with this activity.

My students are divided into six groups of four at six different tables. So for each group, I placed markers, the cards, and a bunch of Link n Learn Links from Learning Resources.

3) To begin the activity, I first had each child write a fraction on a card. Since we had already gone over mixed numbers, they could also choose to write a mixed number.

4) Then, on my command, each group of four students linked their fraction cards in order from least to greatest as fast as they could.

5) As soon as a group had completely linked the four cards, they would raise their hands, and I would check for accuracy. This is obviously optional, but I gave points to the first three groups to finish linking their cards correctly and we kept score.

6) The nifty thing about using the small baskets was that each table captain rotated the baskets to the next table so we could start the activity again. Since I had six groups, we were able to practice six times.
This was a lot of fun with very minimal prep on my part. I will probably now put the cards and links in a math station and have students choose four or five fraction cards and order them independently with the links.
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed this bright idea! You can find lots more teacher fun at my Pinterest account, my Facebook page, and my TpT store. And now, keep on hopping and finding lots more fabulous bright ideas down below!
